Mr. William Edmund "Bill" Elliott passed away on Monday, March 20, 2006. Dear father and father-in-law of Marla (John) Grant of Glen Carbon, Monica (John) Wright of Troy, Melinda (George) Kershaw of Edwardsville, Melissa (David) Menne of St. Louis, MO, Melanie (Dwayne) Trover of Troy, and "Gunner" Elliott of Maryville. Dearest Grandfather of Nicole, Danielle, Elliot, Savannah, Cole, Brendan, Natalie, Taylor, Keaton, Christian, Mason, Jacob, Caira and Chase. Dear Great-Grandfather of Makayla, dear uncle, cousin and friend.
Bill was born May 23, 1930, in Maryville, Illinois, the eldest son of Frank and Janet(nee:Thomas) Elliott. He attended Maryville Elementary School and graduated from Collinsville High School in 1948. He began working at Wagner Electric in Edwardsville as a quality control inspector.
In 1951 he was drafted into the Army and with the 24th Infantry Division, served in Japan and Korea. After returning home in 1953, Bill attended McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois from 1956-1963. He graduated in 1963 from Belleville Barber College. In addition to working for various barbershops in the area, he worked for Motor Carriers Council of St. Louis. In 1969 he began working as a heavy-duty truck specialist for the White Motor Company's Freightliner and Peterbilt truck lines. This career continued until 1992 when he retired.
Bill served as a past commander of the American Legion Post 917 in Maryville, Illinois. He is a lifetime member of the VFW Post 5691 of Collinsville, served as treasurer of the Village of Maryville and is a member of St. Luke's Methodist Church, member of Edwardsville Gun Club, member of Edwardsville Moose Lodge, member of Gateway Ultralite Association, member of the Great River Squadron a Chapter of the Antique Airplane Association.
In his 75 years of living in Maryville, Illinois, Bill was blessed with a beautiful family of 5 daughters, 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, along with many, many friends.
Mr. Elliott is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Janet (nee:Thomas) Elliott, a brother David Elliott and two sisters, Mrs. Gwen Matchell and Mrs. Margaret Schlemer.
Visitation will be held at Laughlin Funeral Home, Troy, Illinois on Thursday, March 23, 2006 from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 24, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at the Laughlin Funeral Home "Chapel" with Reverend Sig Bjorklund officiating. Interment will be at Buck Road Cemetery, Maryville, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the family to later establish a memorial in Bill's honor.
