Virgil A. Whittington, 93, of Troy, IL, born Saturday, Sept. 15, 1928 in Osceola, AK and passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 16, 2022 at Meridian Village, surrounded by his loving family.
Virgil served his Country faithfully in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a long time member of Friedens United Church of Christ, Troy, IL. He and Marian served as the Sextons of Friedens Cemetery, Troy for over 45 years. He was an over the road truck driver for many years and finished his career at the Truck Center in Troy, IL. As a young family man he was involved in Boy Scout Troop 38, serving in many different roles. He was a member of the Arrow and was awarded the highest recognition the Vigil Honors. Virgil was proud of his 60 year membership in the Troy American Legion Post 708. His greatest enjoyment came from his family and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Cameron E. and Maude (nee Lawson) Whittington; his brother, Walter Whittington; sisters, Pearl Rawlings, Atlanta Fuller, Lorraine Winston and Shirley Parson.
Surviving are his wife, Marian (nee Guennewig) Whittington of Troy, IL; his children, Edwin (Karen) Whittington of Troy, IL, David (Terry) Whittington of Troy, IL, Dennis (Michelle) Whittington of Edwardsville, IL and Annette (Randall) Grady of Troy, IL; grandchildren, Justin (Ashley) Whittington, Travis (Lauren) Whittington, Clayton (Jessica) Whittington, Jacob Whittington, Taylor Whittington and Nicole (Brian) Goldfarb; his great-grandchildren, Jackson, Addison, Morgan, Alexis, Bret, Leo, Knox, William and River; his sisters Marylou Coleman of Maryville, IL and Ruby Box of Highland, IL; and many dear friends.

Visitation will be held 5 to 8 pm on Monday, June 20, 2022 at RICHESON FUNERAL HOME, Troy, IL and 10 to 11 am on Tuesday, June 21 at Friedens United Church of Christ, Troy, IL.
Funeral services will be held 11 am on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at Friedens United Church of Christ, Troy, IL with Rev. Tim Harrison officiating. Interment will be in Friedens Cemetery, Troy, IL.
