Verna C. Ottwein, nee Gaertner, 96, of Troy, Ill., born May 23, 1919, in Troy, Ill., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015, at Aspen Creek Care Center in Troy, Ill.
Verna was a life long member of Friedens United Church of Christ, Ladies Guild and quilters of Friedens. She was also a member of the Farm Bureau with her husband for many years. She was a Girl Scout leader, loved cooking and making new recipes. She and George enjoyed playing cards and dancing to the Joe Ladd Band. Most of all her family was an important part of her life and she loved each and every one.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Henry Ottwein, whom she married on April 30, 1941, and who passed away April 23, 2006; her parents, Arthur and Wilhelmina "Minnie", nee Bangert, Gaertner; and her brother, Albert Gaertner.
Surviving are her daughter, Victoria (Thomas) Fischer of Troy, Ill.; granddaughter, Rebecca Fischer of St. Louis, Mo.; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and friends.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, 2015, at Richeson Funeral Home, Troy, Ill., and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, 2015, at Friedens United Church of Christ, Troy, Ill.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, 2015, at Friedens United Church of Christ, Troy, Ill., with Rev. Douglas Seagle officiating. Burial will be at Friedens Cemetery, Troy, Ill.
