Obituary

MARTINEZ, DR. TERRY TYLER
63, of Collinsville, IL, was born September 4, 1946 in Linton, IN and died March 25, 2010.

Terry was a quiet, generous, loving man who cared deeply for his family and helped so many people throughout his life. He always had a quick smile and a hearty laugh. He appreciated the simple joys and wonders of life. Everyone who knew him will remember him as a kind and gentle man.

A born educator, he encouraged and influenced generations of professional pharmacists, nurses, and dentists. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed biking, camping, swimming, ice skating, and hiking. Terry enjoyed planning trips and traveling with his family -- especially to Hawaii, the National Parks, British Columbia, and the Caribbean.

As a board-certified toxicologist with Toxicologic Associates, Terry served as an expert witness for court cases throughout the Midwest. He was a professor of pharmacology and toxicology for nearly thirty years, most recently teaching at St. Louis College of Pharmacy and SIU Edwardsville. He worked with poison control centers for over ten years. Terry earned degrees from Purdue University and the University of British Columbia. He was a member of several professional organizations including the Western Pharmacology Society for which he was instrumental in mentoring students. He was also a veteran who served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth (nee Sonsini); mother Iva Lorene (nee Frye); daughter Sarah Irene and her husband Christopher "Chip" Peila; daughter Laura Elizabeth; son Daniel Noah; grandchildren Marina Keale Peila and Benjamin Tosh Peila; uncle Everett "Bub" Frye; and his cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father Frederick "Fred" Tyler Martinez.

Terry will be remembered on Saturday, April 3 at 1 pm at the Laughlin-Richeson Funeral Home in Troy, Illinois. A reception will follow the service and burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Western Pharmacology Society to further his work encouraging new students and research. Donations can be sent to the society at:
