Obituary

Norbert J. Schultz, 76, of Holiday Shores, Ill., born April 25, 1937, in Gardener, Ill., died on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at Alton Memorial Hospital, Alton, Ill.

Mr. Schultz was successful in motivating, teaching and directing music students.

A member of the Music Teachers National Association, Schultz' longest teaching position was for the Edwardsville School District as band and vocal teacher from 1970 to 1985. He taught at the elementary, middle school and high school levels.

He graduated with a bachelor's of science degree in music education from Illinois State University. His first position was as a music teacher at an elementary and high school in Kempton and Cabrey, Ill., from 1959 to 1961. He continued teaching and directing music as the band and vocal teacher at Taft Grade School in Lockport, Ill., from 1963 to 1967, and was later the band director at Lyons School District in Lyons, Ill., from 1967 to 1970. From 1986 to 1999, Schultz worked as beginning and intermediate band director at Woodward and Shenandoah elementary Schools, in the St. Louis School District. He was also named a team member in a Citizen Ambassador Program Elementary Education Delegation to Vietnam, part of the Eisenhower Award from the University of Toledo in 1994 and was profiled in Marquis Who's Who in America and the World publication 2005 edition.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Troy, Ill., and was the Catholic Music Coordinator/Choir Director at Chapel One at Scott Airforce Base.

Norbert was preceded in death by a daughter, Sonia Schultz; and his parents, Louis and Vera, nee Seabert, Schultz

Surviving are his wife, Janet, nee Jenne, Schultz of Holiday Shores, Ill.; daughter, Shelly Luppen of Woodbury, Minn.; stepson, John (Diane) Bracamontes of Granite City, Ill.; grandchildren, Jake Luppen, John Michael (Jessica) Bracamontes, Joshua (Lauren) Bracamontes and Christine Bracamontes; great-grandchildren, Jackson, Brady and Gordon Bracamontes; sisters; Pat (Jerry) Stanley of Rock Falls, Ill., Jane (Jim) Smiley of Las Vegas, Nev., Anita (Ron) Isom of Belleville, Ill., and Cindy (Richard) Etz of Dunedin, Fla.;

Service will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Troy, Ill., with the Rev. Mitchel Schuessler officiating. Interment in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Troy, Ill.
