Obituary

Gladys Esther Bliss, 93, of Troy, Ill., born July 2, 1921, in Stirum, N.D., died Friday, August 1, 2014, at Liberty Village, Maryville, Ill.

Gladys graduated from high school in St. Paul, Minn., and worked at Swifts Packing House in St. Paul, Minn., until she married Lester Henry Bliss on May 24, 1941. Gladys and Lester moved to East St. Louis where Les taught cadets to fly at Parks Air College training for the Air Force for World War II. Gladys worked at Kroger in East St. Louis until they bought a small farm east of Troy. They built their home on the National Trail in 1946. Gladys continued to work at Kroger's in Troy for nine years until her twin boys were born in 1952. After her husband Les passed away Aug. 19, 1962, she went to work at the new Molden School Cafeteria for three years, then on to work for United Savings and Loan and Schaffer Insurance Agency for 17 years until her retirement.

She loved her home and flowers, dancing, loved to camp, hike and continued to ride her bike until about nine years ago. She loved to travel and was a great seamstress sewing all of her own clothing.

Gladys moved to the Fountains of Troy in March of 2006 and lived there until recently when she moved to Liberty Village.

She was a member of Friedens United Church of Christ, Ladies Bible Class, Ladies Guild, quilted and sang in the church choir. She served on Illinois South Conference twice, was a member of Troy Homemakers Extension, Troy Senior Citizens and the Moose lodge, also a member of Lacefield Organ Club. She recently attended Lloyd's retirement picnic in which she was recognized as the only surviving of the first three workers in the Molden School Cafeteria.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Henry Bliss; her parents; a sister and a brother.

Surviving are her sons, Lloyd Lee Bliss and Larry Allen Bliss both of Troy, Ill.; a few nieces and nephews; and cousins scattered around the country.

Memorials may be made to Friedens United Church of Christ or Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at Friedens Church, Troy, Ill.

Celebration of Gladys life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at Friedens United Church of Christ, Troy, Ill., with the Rev. Douglas Seagle officiating. Interment will be in the Friedens Cemetery Troy, Ill.
