George Ottwein, 93, of Troy, Illinois died at his home on April 23, 2006.
He was born on March 24, 1913, to George and Caroline (Wilhelm) Ottwein. George was a life-long resident of Troy. On April 30, 1941 he married the former Verna Gaertner. They have one daughter, Victoria (Tom) Fischer, and one granddaughter, Rebecca.
George was a member of Friedens United Church of Christ, where he was both baptised and confirmed. He also served on the church council as treasurer and was a member of the Churchman's Brotherhood. Besides being active in his church, George was a very active member of the Troy Community. He was a retired Troy Volunteer Fireman, served on the board of directors of the Troy Grain Company, and belonged to the Illinois Grain Dealers Association. George also served on the board of directors of the Troy Savings and Homestead Association (presently Collinsville Building and Loan).
George and his brother Oscar operated a diary farm west of Troy. For many yrears they bottled milk and delivered it daily to area Troy residents. In his youth, he was active in local sports and played center field for the Brookside Warblers. After retirement from farming, Goerge enjoyed family activities, gardening, fishing, playing Euchre, watching birds and building birdhouses.
He is survived by his wife Verna, daughter Vicki, son-in-law Tom, granddaughter Becky, godchildren Carrie Metze and Dick Voss, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Oscar, and sisters Irma Ludwig, Helen Voss, and Hulda Becker.
Visitation will be held at Laughlin Funeral Home in troy on Wednesday, April 26, between 4 and 8 p.m.
A service will be held at Friedens United Church of Christ on Thursday, April 27, at 11 a.m.. The Reverend Scott Hawker will officiate. Pallbearers are Lesllie Becker, Terry Becker, Kenneth Becker, Merrill Ottwein, Paul Ottwein and Dick Voss. He will be buried at Friedens Cemetery.
