Fred Herman, Jr., 84, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2024, at his residence in Troy, IL.
Fred was born on Wednesday, January 10, 1940, in Bowdle, South Dakota, the son of the late Fred Herman, Sr. and Mary (Hettich) Herman.
Fred grew up on the family farm near Tolstoy, South Dakota until the age of eight when his family moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota, where he later graduated from Aberdeen Central High School.
Fred faithfully served in the United States Marine Corps (USMC) during the Vietnam War Campaign. During his time in the USMC, he spent 19 months in the jungles of Laos as an Aviation Refueler/Bulk Fuels Specialist. After his tour in Vietnam, Fred was stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, CA, where he remained until his honorable discharge from the USMC in February 1964.
After his time in the USMC, Fred moved around awhile until he and his family settled in Lakewood, Colorado in 1973, where he continued his profession in the construction industry as a Drywall Finisher for 30 years.
In 1992, Fred moved to the western slope of Colorado and settled in Crawford, CO, where he developed his passion for owning and training horses. Fred was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt elk, deer, pheasant, and enjoyed fishing.
Fred was preceded in death by his first wife Rita, his second wife Dorothy, his parents Fred and Mary, and his eight siblings: Agatha Coffey, Edward Herman, Caroline Reinken, Tom Herman, LaVera (Elmer) Job, LaVern (Anna) Herman, Elton (Rita) Herman, and Dorothy (Ray) Dobberpuhl.
Those left to cherish his memory include his brother Barney Herman of Aberdeen, SD, his two daughters Kimberly Herman of Lake Ozark, MO, Michelle (Scott) Hinkle of Lake Ozark, MO, his son Todd (Susan) Herman of Troy, IL, his seven grandchildren; Julian (Samantha) Atencio,
Zachary (Brittney) Herman, Dorian Atencio, Adrian Atencio, Todd Herman, Jr., Matthew Herman, Emanuel Herman, his seven great grandchildren, and numerous family members and friends.

Fred will be returning to Aberdeen, South Dakota to be laid to rest near his parents at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 5851 East US-12, Aberdeen, SD 57401.
Visitation will be held 10 to 11 am on Friday September 6, 2024 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 111 South Main Street, Aberdeen, SD 57401.
Funeral services will be held 11 am on Friday, September 6, at Spitzer -Miller Funeral Home, with Pastor Drew Becker officiating.
