Obituary

Evelyn Lucille Aebel (nee Slayton), 94, beloved wife of the late Major Cleo F. Aebel, Sr. of Troy, IL passed away peacefully at home under the care of her children and hospice at 8:45 AM on May 26, 2017.

Evelyn was born March 10, 1923 in Laurel, MS and grew up surrounded by the love of her little sister Ruby (Hargrave) and her many cousins in the Lee family. She was always a remarkably determined person; she put herself through business school, took flying lessons and got her pilot's license when she was in her late teens. On a tip from a friend's father, she took the civil service test and landed a job as a stenographer at what was then Keesler Army Air Field in Biloxi, MS. At about that time, a young serviceman named Cleo from the Pharmacy Department was nursing a broken ankle and had been assigned to desk duty in the same office. Romance blossomed and Evelyn became a war bride. Through the years she and Cleo were stationed in MS, FL, IL, and England. When they settled in Troy, Evelyn served as a Girl Scout leader for many years, taught Sunday School at Friedens UCC in Troy for over 20 years, and worked as a CNA/Ward Clerk at Eden Village Care Center in Glen Carbon for over 10 years. The last five or so years she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Troy. She loved quilting, gardening, reading, animals, children, and most of all, her family. She was a good listener and always had wise words of advice.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo F. Aebel whom she married May 2, 1942 in Biloxi, MS; and her sons, George and Cleo Aebel Jr.; parents, Thomas C. and Lucy (nee Price) Slayton; and a sister, Ruby Hargrave.

Surviving are her sons, Charles of Kirkwood, MO and James (Sally) of Edwardsville; her daughters, Mary Beth Lorsbach (Larry) of Collinsville and Barbara, of Troy; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
