Donnie R. Shurtz, 61, of Troy, Ill., born April 27, 1951, in DuQuoin, Ill., died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at Anderson Hospital, Maryville, Ill.
Donnie was instrumental in getting handicap accessibility at Meramec College in St. Louis, Mo. He was a member of the Lion's Club, St. Louis, Mo. He was active in the Old Newsboy paper drives, tutored many younger students helping them to learn to study. He was an avid Cardinal fan and a highlight was at the 1982 World Series being on the elevator with August Busch and the World Series Trophy. Donnie loved fishing and any outdoor sports activity.
The family would like to thank Dr. Motwani and his wonderful caring staff and the IMU 3rd floor nursing staff at Anderson Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald L. Shurtz.
He is survived by his mother, Kay, nee Kumacha, Shurtz of Troy, Ill.; his sister, Deborah Naes of St. Louis, Mo.; two nieces, Brandi Kay (Brian) Kaufman of Troy, Ill., and Chloe Naes of St. Louis, Mo.; three great-nephews, Scott Weisser, Zachary Weisser and Alexander Kaufman; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at Laughlin-Richeson Funeral Home, Troy, Ill.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at Laughlin-Richeson Funeral Home, Troy, Ill., with the Rev. Jim Donahue officiating. Burial will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
