Mr. Delmer Launius, age 83, of St. Jacob, Illinois, passed away Friday, December 3, 2004 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Illinois.
Mr. Launius was born May 24, 1921 to Jeff Hillard Launius and Delcie (nee Jenkins) Launius in Franklin County, Illinois. He grew up in southern Illinois, graduating from McLeansboro Township High School in 1939. He served in World War II in the US Army Air Corps from 1942 through 1946. Upon returning from military service, he continued his academic endeavors at SIU Carbondale, earning his Masters degree. He taught at Sugar Creek Country School, Bonnie High School, where he also coached basketball, and began his teaching career at McCray-Dewey High School and St. Jacob High School (later renamed Triad High School) in 1948. He become Vocational Director at Triad High School in 1970. He retired from teaching in 1981 and began a career in real estate, which he continued for the following 20 years. He has held several respected positions within the community, including Director of Troy Security Bank, Director of Collinsville Building and Loan, President of Troy Savings and Homestead. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Troy and was a well-liked and respected gentleman among his peers.
He is survived by his wife, Violet (nee Groennert) Launius of St. Jacob, Illinois, whom he married December 13, 1952; two sons, Steven Launius of Nashville, Illinois and Gregory Launius of St. Louis, Missouri and a daughter Sherry (Larry) Manley of St. Jacob, Illinois; three grandchildren, Christopher Schlemer, Dana (Brian) Proffitt, and Keri Schlemer; and one great grandson, Brayden Proffitt.
