Charles J. "Charlie" Hanks, 83,of Troy, Ill., born Dec. 5, 1926, in Troy, Ill., died on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at Relais Bonne Eau, Hospice of Southern Illinois in Edwardsville, Ill.
Mr. Hanks was in charge of quality control retiring from Wagner Electric after a lifelong career. A life resident of Troy, Charlie was a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church, American Legion Post 708, Troy, Ill., and Edwardsville Sportsman Club. He loved to fish, boat and camp and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Charlie had served in the U.S. Army during World War II - stationed in the Phillippines.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard C. and Alice, nee Droy, Hanks Sr.; and a brother, Howard C. "June Bug" Hanks Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Mae M., nee Capelle, Hanks of Troy, Ill., whom he married on Oct. 21, 1950, at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Troy, Ill.; sons, Steve (Maureen) Hanks of Manito, Ill, and John (Carrie) Hanks of Edwardsville, Ill.; daughter, Gail Shimer of Highland, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Matt (Beth) Hanks, Maggie (Josh) Charlton, Jessie (Matt) Meischer, Cody, Ethan and Jared Shimer, Samantha and Jake Hanks; eight great-grandchildren, Gracie, Lukey, Lucy, Emmy, Janey, Jude, Jack and Charlie; a brother, Neil (Jackie) Hanks of Leesburg, Fla.; brothers-in-law, Paul Martin (Margie) Capelle of Highland, Ill., and Art D. (Nancy) Capelle of Troy, Ill.; and sisters-in-law, Sue Hanks of Troy, Ill., and Mary L. Nemon of Crossville, Tenn.
Memorials may be made to Relais Bonne Eau, Hospice of Southern Illinois Home, Edwardsville, Ill., or Masses and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at Laughlin-Richeson Funeral Home in Troy, Ill., and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Troy, Ill.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at the church with Father Pat Jakel officiating. Interment will be in St. Jerome Cemetery in Troy, Ill.
